OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of its former researcher, Suchir Balaji, who passed away in November at the age of 26. Balaji, who had been with the company for nearly four years, left OpenAI in August 2023 after accusing the organization of violating copyright laws during the development of its AI models.
Balaji’s Allegations Against OpenAI
Before his death, Balaji had been vocal about the company’s shift towards profit-driven motives that he felt compromised its ethical standards. His whistleblower allegations suggested that OpenAI’s actions around AI development may have violated copyright laws, sparking a storm within the tech community. Balaji’s claims included accusations that the company used protected data without authorization in its efforts to create powerful AI models like ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s Statement on Balaji’s Death
In the wake of his passing, OpenAI took to social media to create a sense of vigilance and pay their respects with deep condolences for the family of Balaji. They called him a “valued member” of their team and articulated that they were still “heartbroken” by his passing while persisting to miss him deeply. End.
“Suchir was a wonderful member of our team, and we are still very sad by his loss. We still miss him so much,” OpenAI said. They also respected the privacy of the family and chose not to say anything further as a mark of respect for the situation.

Balaji’s Mother Accusations
However, the official narrative of Balaji’s death being a suicide has been called into question by his mother, Poornima Ramarao. In an emotional interview, she alleged that her son’s death was not a suicide, as the police had initially claimed. Ramarao pointed to significant discrepancies in the investigation and suggested that critical documents, which could have implicated OpenAI, went missing after her son’s passing.

“Everybody is suppressed. Nobody is ready to come up and tell the truth. Even the attorneys have been made to tell that it is a suicide,” she said in an interview with controversial former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson.
Elon Musk React
Prominent figures have taken sides with the claims of Ramarao. The billionaire entrepreneur and former member of the OpenAI board, Elon Musk described the allegations as “extremely concerning” and called for an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley Congressman Ro Khanna echoed a “full and transparent” investigation, suggesting the FBI should also look into the case given its seriousness.

As the investigation continues, the death of Suchir Balaji raises questions about transparency and accountability in the AI industry. OpenAI, meanwhile, faces mounting scrutiny over its business practices, particularly related to copyright issues. Balaji’s legacy as a whistleblower may spark further investigations into the ethical practices of major tech companies.
