In a noteworthy development in Haryana, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar revealed that a staggering 40 thousand elderly individuals have voluntarily opted out of receiving pension benefits. The disclosure came to light during a special discussion program held on Saturday, where the Chief Minister underscored the significant impact of this collective decision. The conscientious choice made by these citizens has resulted in substantial savings for the government, amounting to approximately 100 crores of rupees.
This unexpected turn of events has paved the way for a positive initiative, with the earmarked funds now slated for the construction of Seva Ashram, reflecting a strategic reallocation for the greater welfare of the community. The decision by these senior citizens not only showcases their self-sufficiency but also highlights a unique fiscal benefit for the government, fostering a commendable example of civic collaboration and responsible governance.
The Chief Minister personally spoke to those senior citizens who, despite being eligible for old age allowance, opted not to avail it. “This collective sacrifice contributes to redirecting funds for the welfare of others, emphasising the selfless strength of individuals like them, which is integral to the strength of the country and society,” he said.
The CM informed that, after initiating old age pension through the family identity card (PPP) in a proactive mode, eligible individuals aged 60 and above are approached to consent to start their pension.
The CM mentioned during the discussion that the Haryana government has established a senior citizen corner in hospitals to ensure that the elderly do not have to stand in queues, from obtaining prescriptions to receiving medicine. For the protection of the elderly, the Sentinel Scheme for those above 80 years of age has been introduced in the budget of the financial year. Additionally, a care and senior citizen service ashram for the elderly living alone has been opened in Rewari. A similar ashram is under construction in Karnal, and land has been identified in 14 other districts. The CM further stated that, in addition to these initiatives, old age homes are being operated by the Red Cross Society in Panipat, Ambala, and Panchkula.
