Eknath Shinde Slams Kunal Kamra’s Joke, Says Satire Must Have Limits

Comedian Kunal Kamra caused a massive stir on Sunday after modifying a song from Dil Toh Pagal Hai to make a ‘gaddar’ (traitor) reference. Although he did not mention any names, many assumed the joke was aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Shiv Sena Leaders Demand Apology

Shiv Sena leaders strongly condemned Kunal Kamra’s remarks. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the joke and urged Kamra to apologize, calling it “low-level comedy.” Meanwhile, several Shiv Sena workers took drastic action by storming and vandalizing the Habitat comedy club, where Kamra performed. Mumbai police later detained and arrested some of them for the damage.

Shinde Responds, Says Satire Must Have Limits

Breaking his silence, Shinde addressed the controversy for the first time. He acknowledged the right to free speech but insisted satire should have boundaries. “Freedom of speech is there, and we understand satire, but there should be a limit,” he said.

Shinde also took a veiled dig at the opposition, suggesting Kamra’s remarks were politically motivated. He compared the comedian’s joke to taking a “supari” (contract) to speak against someone.

Justifying Shiv Sena Workers’ Reaction

Shinde defended his party workers, implying that Kamra’s joke provoked their response. He stated, “The other person should also maintain a certain level; otherwise, action causes reaction.” His comments seemed to justify the vandalism at the comedy club.

Free Speech vs. Political Tolerance

This incident has reignited the debate on free speech and political tolerance. While Kamra has not directly responded to Shinde’s statement, many social media users have defended him, arguing that comedy should not be censored. On the other hand, Shiv Sena supporters believe the joke was inappropriate.

For now, the controversy remains heated, with both sides refusing to back down.
