The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a major revision in pay structures for field-level electoral staff. In a press release on Saturday, the commission said it will double the annual remuneration for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and increase the pay for BLO Supervisors. Additionally, for the first time ever, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) will also receive honorarium for their work.
According to the ECI, clean and accurate electoral rolls are essential for any democratic process. The commission recognised the critical role played by BLOs, BLO Supervisors, EROs, and AEROs in ensuring transparent and unbiased electoral rolls. “Pure electoral rolls are the bedrock of democracy... The Commission has therefore decided to double the annual remuneration for BLOs & also enhanced the remuneration of BLO Supervisors,” the press release stated. This is the first major revision in their pay since 2015.
Before the revision, the annual pay was:
BLOs – ₹6,000
Incentive for BLOs during Revision – ₹1,000
BLO Supervisors – ₹12,000
Now, the revised pay will be:
BLOs – ₹12,000
Incentive for BLOs during Revision – ₹2,000
BLO Supervisors – ₹18,000
AEROs – ₹25,000 (new honorarium)
EROs – ₹30,000 (new honorarium)
As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure accurate and updated electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a special incentive of ₹6,000 for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which is beginning with the state of Bihar.
This incentive is aimed at recognising the extra workload and responsibilities taken on by BLOs during the revision period. The SIR involves door-to-door verification, identifying eligible voters, correcting entries, and removing ineligible names, making it a critical exercise in maintaining the integrity of the voter list.
By launching the initiative in Bihar—a state with complex demographic patterns and a high rate of migration—the ECI aims to set a precedent for clean, inclusive, and up-to-date electoral rolls. The commission also hinted that similar incentives may be considered for BLOs in other states as the SIR expands across India.
This special payment is in addition to their revised annual remuneration and reflects the commission’s broader intent to fairly compensate BLOs for their field-level dedication during high-intensity electoral work.
ECI’s Commitment
The Election Commission emphasized that these changes aim to fairly reward the efforts of personnel who work on the ground to ensure accurate voter lists and assist the public in the electoral process. “This decision reflects the Election Commission's commitment to adequately compensate election personnel who work tirelessly at the field level to maintain accurate electoral rolls, assist voters, and strengthen the electoral process,” the statement said.
