Earthquake Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR And Regions | 5.8 Magnitude Epicenter At Afghanistan

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Afghanistan at a depth of 160 km, sending tremors that were felt across northern India, including Delhi-NCR and Jammu & Kashmir.

Tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and parts of north India on Thursday night following a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in southern Afghanistan. The quake occurred at 10:26 PM IST at a depth of 160 km.

According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, the epicenter was located at 34.58 N latitude and 70.66 E longitude. Although there have been indications of earthquakes in northern areas, including Jammu and Kashmir, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage in India.

The incident caused brief alarm among residents, with many people reporting the tremors on social media. Authorities are monitoring the situation.

Where and When Did the Earthquake Occur?

According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar (MCS), the earthquake hit southern Afghanistan at 10:26 PM IST. At a depth of 160 kilometers, the epicenter was located near the latitude and longitude coordinates of 34.58°N and 70.66°E. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.8.

The depth of this earthquake could be the reason it was felt across such a wide area.  Although the epicenter is in Afghanistan, the energy goes upward and outward, making it feelable throughout northern India.

Which Areas in India Felt the Tremors?

The tremors were felt across a wide swath of northern India. There were reports from:

  • The entire Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR)
  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Parts of Punjab and Haryana

For a few seconds, residents of multi-story buildings noticed a noticeable swaying motion that briefly alarmed them.
