The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections will finally reveal their winners today. Counting of votes began at 8:30 am, and all eyes are fixed on the results. This year, the main contest is between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
Higher Turnout This Year
The elections saw noticeable enthusiasm among students. On Thursday, thousands cast their votes to highlight issues they want resolved on campus. According to officials, 39.36% of students exercised their voting rights, a rise of nearly 4% compared to last year’s 35% turnout.
For the first time, fourth-year students were eligible voters, though the overall voting percentage did not see a dramatic jump. Out of 1,53,100 registered voters, about 60,272 students cast their votes. Interestingly, until a day before polling, estimates had suggested that over 2.75 lakh students might participate.
Tight Security During Voting
The polling process was carried out under strict security arrangements. Students were allowed inside voting centers only after detailed checks, ensuring that the process remained smooth and peaceful.
Fate of Candidates Sealed in EVMs
With voting completed, the outcome now depends on the electronic voting machines. In total, 21 candidates are in the fray for the posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. Voting for the morning colleges began at 8:30 am, and the results are expected to be announced later today.
What Happens if ABVP Wins?
-
ABVP has been a dominant force in DUSU elections in recent years.
-
A win would strengthen its campus presence and allow the organisation to push forward its agenda on student issues such as hostels, scholarships, and campus safety.
-
It would also be seen as a boost for its parent body, RSS/BJP, especially ahead of other student union elections in India.
What Happens if NSUI Wins?
-
An NSUI victory would mark a major comeback for Congress’s student wing, which has struggled to regain dominance in Delhi University over the past decade.
-
A win would energise Congress at the youth level, providing it with momentum ahead of key state and national elections.
-
It could also shift campus politics towards issues like fee hikes, employment opportunities, and academic reforms, areas NSUI has been vocal about.
The higher turnout, along with first-time participation by fourth-year students, has added extra weight to the 2025 contest. Both ABVP and NSUI are confident, but the results will decide who leads the student body and sets the tone for campus politics in the coming year.
