Skywatchers and astro photographers across the world are preparing for a rare celestial show as the total lunar eclipse blood moon approaches on September 7–8, 2025. Millions of shutterbugs will step outdoors to admire the moon’s crimson glow, and photography enthusiasts are planning carefully to capture the moment.

From Europe to Asia, Africa to Australia, the eclipse offers a breathtaking view and a chance to test photography skills.

Timings and Duration of Total Lunar Eclipse

The blood moon totality will last 82 minutes, from 17:30 UTC to 18:52 UTC. This is longer than the March 2025 eclipse, which will give photographers plenty of time to experiment with settings and capture multiple shots.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch without special glasses. The main challenge is photography, as the moon becomes dimmer under Earth’s shadow.

Photography Tips for the Lunar Eclipse

Experts say capturing the eclipse is possible with basic equipment. At a minimum, you need a camera, lens, and tripod.

Telephoto shots: Use a 200mm or longer lens to capture details of the moon’s surface. Longer lenses need faster shutter speeds and higher ISO.

Wide-angle shots: Include landscapes, skylines, or silhouettes for dramatic photos. Composition matters for artistic results.

Camera Exposure Settings to Capture Lunar Eclipse

Start with a lower ISO such as 100-400, and use F stop/Aperture on medium as f/5.6-f11, and the shutter speed should be between 1/6–1/400 sec for the beginning of the eclipse.

Use manual mode, focus on the moon, and keep your camera on a tripod to avoid shaking because a minor shake can ruin the whole picture, and a tripod will help you to get clear shots of the bright moon.

As the eclipse continues and the moon gets darker, make your shutter speed longer or raise the ISO to capture more light. During a total lunar eclipse, use much longer exposures to show the moon’s red color and details. This way, you can take good photos of all stages of the eclipse.

Practical Tips

  • Use a sturdy tripod to avoid blur.
  • Experiment with exposure settings.
  • Take multiple shots at different exposures.
  • Include interesting foregrounds for context.
  • Scout locations for clear horizons and low light pollution.

Special Opportunities

In northern latitudes, the eclipse may coincide with the aurora borealis. This creates a rare chance to photograph both events in one frame, though clear skies and good timing are essential.

September’s full moon, also called the Corn Moon, will be bright on its own. The lunar eclipse makes it even more special. For those who cannot view it in person, live streams will be available.
