In a major crackdown on Bihar‘s ongoing liquor ban, 40 people attending a wedding procession in Muzaffarpur were arrested on Sunday for consuming alcohol in contravention of the state‘s prohibition laws. The incident shows that the state is yet to overcome the challenges that it has been facing since it banned liquor in 2016.
The arrested individuals, all from the groom’s side, were found intoxicated and were reportedly planning to perform a ‘naagin’ dance during the wedding procession. Police officials also discovered that the attendees had brought liquor bottles, which they intended to gift to others at the wedding. In addition to the 40 people arrested, authorities also apprehended seven liquor traders, who allegedly supplied the alcohol.
The police action involved excise department officials who, working undercover, monitored the situation and successfully carried out the operation. Two vehicles used by the wedding attendees were seized, and the liquor was confiscated. Excise Inspector Shivendra Jha stated that the department has been actively pursuing a campaign against liquor smugglers and violators of the ban.
Bihar has been struggling to enforce its total liquor ban, with several incidents of illicit liquor consumption and trade emerging over the years. Despite the ban, unregulated liquor sales continue to thrive in the state. Last month, the Patna High Court criticised state officials for their alleged complicity in the liquor trade, claiming that many government officers benefit from the illegal liquor trade, which undermines the purpose of the prohibition.
The crackdown in Muzaffarpur serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by Bihar’s government in controlling alcohol consumption despite the prohibition laws, which have led to a mix of enforcement efforts, public backlash, and growing illegal activities.
