Five people, among them an eight-year-old girl, were injured late Saturday night when a car driven by a drunk driver veered onto a footpath in South Delhi’s Vasant Vihar and ran over them. The incident happened around 1:45 am on July 9.

As per officials quoted by PTI, the victims were sleeping on the footpath outside Shiva Camp when the speeding Audi drove over the pavement. Two couples and the kid, all from Rajasthan originally, are among the injured.

They were named as Ladhi, 40; her daughter Bimla, 8; her husband Sabami (alias Chirma), 45; and Ram Chander, 45, and wife Narayani, 35.

Accused Arrested On The Spot

The driver, 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar, was arrested on the spot. The police confirmed in medical tests that Shekhar, a Dwarka resident, was intoxicated during the accident. “A preliminary inquiry and eyewitnesses indicated that a white Audi vehicle ran over the victims who had been sleeping on the footpath and Shekhar. was arrested by the police on the spot,” officials informed PTI.

Before the police could reach the scene, the victims were already taken to the hospital for their wounds to be treated.

The government later began a further investigation to identify the whole series of circumstances and investigate any other negligence. There have also been legal actions taken against Shekhar.

Another Incident in Mumbai

This incident is the most recent in a disturbing trend of drunk driving accidents in India. On July 12, in Worli, Mumbai, a 75-year-old man was severely injured after being hit by a two-wheeler driven by a drunk cop.

Only last month, on the outskirts of Gurgaon’s DLF Cyberpark, a man lost his life and four others were seriously injured when a Hyundai Creta driven by a drunk driver ran over an e-rickshaw.
