The festive season of Diwali 2025 is here, and school students across India are eagerly waiting for their schools and colleges to close for the celebrations. Many students are already making plans to visit family, go on trips, or spend quality time with friends.
This year, Diwali will bring a five-day extended holiday in most states, beginning from Dhanteras (October 18) and ending on Bhai Dooj (October 23). However, the holiday schedule differs across states, depending on regional customs and government directives.
Schools in several states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, will remain closed from October 18 to October 23 for Diwali. The break covers major festivals such as Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
Parents and students are advised to confirm the final dates with their respective school administrations, as some institutions may extend or adjust holidays depending on local directives.
Students in Rajasthan are among the first to enjoy Diwali holidays. According to the Rajasthan Education Department, schools closed on October 13 and will reopen on October 24. This gives teachers and students a 12-day vacation — one of the longest in the country.
In Bihar, schools will close on October 18. The holidays will cover both Diwali and Chhath Puja, one of the state’s biggest festivals. This means students will get several days off to prepare for and celebrate both events with their families.
According to the Uttar Pradesh Education Department, schools across the state will close from October 20 to October 23. Since October 19 falls on a Sunday, students will get a five-day break in total.
In West Bengal, recent heavy rain and landslides led to temporary school closures, especially in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong regions. Schools are expected to reopen on October 13 but will shut again for Kali Puja, Diwali, Bhai Dooj, and Chhath Puja. The state will thus observe a long festive break.
In Karnataka, schools are closed from October 8 to October 18, not only for Diwali but also to allow the government to conduct the Caste-Based Socio-Educational Survey. Classes are expected to resume after October 18.
