Diwali Debate: Bageshwar Dham Defends Firecrackers, Kejriwal Weighs In

New Delhi: As the Hindu festival of Diwali approaches, a debate has erupted surrounding the tradition of bursting firecrackers. Hindu spiritual leader Bageshwar Dham Sarkar, also known as Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, has come out strongly in favor of this practice, criticizing those who call for its avoidance during festivals.

Bageshwar Dham’s Standpoint

On October 30, Sarkar voiced his frustration over the ongoing criticism of Hindu festivals for contributing to pollution. He stated, “During Diwali, they say that bursting firecrackers causes air pollution. During Holi, they show fake concern for water. But these people forget to teach the same lesson during New Year. Why this bias and hatred towards Hindu festivals?” His comments were supported by many who believe that cultural practices should be preserved.

Several supporters echoed Sarkar’s sentiments, insisting that no one should blame or defame Hindu traditions. They argued that if there is genuine concern for pollution during Diwali, the same standards should apply to other festivities, such as Bakrid or New Year celebrations.

Opposition from Muslim Cleric Tauqeer Raza

The situation intensified when Muslim cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza responded to Sarkar’s remarks. Raza criticized the extensive use of firecrackers, calling it a waste of money and asserting that Diwali should be celebrated as a festival of lights, not firecrackers. He suggested that while firecrackers might be used in weddings, they should be restricted during religious occasions. “If anyone has to take the help of firecrackers to express their happiness during festivals, that cannot be called happiness,” Raza stated.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Take on Firecrackers

Adding to the debate, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal voiced his support for the ban on firecrackers, citing pollution concerns. He noted that both the Supreme Court and the High Court have emphasized the importance of avoiding firecrackers during Diwali to protect the environment. “This is the festival of lights and not firecrackers. Whatever pollution will happen, our children will suffer from it, so there is no Hindu-Muslim in this. Everyone’s life is important,” Kejriwal asserted.

Interestingly, Kejriwal previously faced criticism for allowing his party members to burst crackers during celebrations for his release from Tihar Jail, while urging Hindus to refrain from doing so during Diwali.
