When accused Vipin Bhati, who set his wife Nikki on fire, was shot in an encounter while attempting to flee from police custody, the dowry murder case in Greater Noida took an unexpected turn. Despite horrifying evidence and witness accounts, Vipin said he has "no remorse" and claimed his wife "died on her own."

Accused Shows No Remorse

Vipin Bhati, 28-year-old Nikki’s husband, made shocking statements after police caught him. Speaking from his hospital bed, he told ANI, "I have no remorse. I haven't killed her. She died on her own. Husbands and wives often have fights...it is very common."

Police said Vipin tried to snatch a pistol from officers when they were collecting evidence. In response, the police opened fire and shot him in the leg. He was taken to a hospital immediately.

Father Demands Justice

Nikki’s father, Bikhari Singh Payla, expressed anger and pain after the encounter. He told NDTV, "They are killers, they should be shot, their home razed. My daughter was bringing up her son by running a parlour. They tortured her. The whole family was involved in the conspiracy, and they killed my daughter."

Horrifying Crime Caught on Video

Two days ago, Vipin set Nikki on fire at their home in Greater Noida. Videos showed Vipin assaulting her, with blood stains visible on his body. Another disturbing video showed Nikki ablaze, limping down the stairs, before collapsing with severe burns.

She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi but could not survive the injuries.

Child Witnesses the Murder

The couple’s young son witnessed the horrifying attack. He said, "They first put something on mumma. Then they slapped her before setting her on fire using a lighter." When asked if his father killed his mother, the boy nodded yes.

Sister’s Testimony Against In-Laws

Nikki’s sister, Kanchan, who is married to Vipin’s brother, confirmed the dowry harassment. She alleged that Vipin and his mother set Nikki on fire. She added that both sisters faced constant torture for dowry and that the in-laws demanded Rs 36 lakh.

Based on Kanchan’s complaint, police arrested Vipin. However, his parents and brother are still on the run.

Case Sparks Outrage

In Greater Noida and beyond, the brutal dowry murder has sparked intense outrage. Locals and activists have called for women to be shielded from dowry harassment and for the accused to face severe punishment.

The case also brings attention to the persistent problem of dowry-related crimes in India, where many women still endure assault and torture from their in-laws despite the legal protections.
