Delhi Sees Highest Peak Power Demand, Expects Record-Breaking Consumption

Delhi Sees Highest Peak Power Demand, Expects Record-Breaking Consumption

Delhi’s peak power demand has reached its highest point of the season, hitting 6780 MW at 3:26 pm according to data from the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC). Both BRPL and BYPL have successfully met the peak power demand in their respective areas, as reported in a recent release.

Comparing the power demand trends, May 2024 has seen higher peak power demands than May 2023 on each day so far. Last year, in the first 16 days of May, the peak power demand stood at 5781 MW. This increase in demand is attributed to the impact of weather conditions, which significantly influence electricity consumption patterns in the city.

The month of April also saw notable differences in peak power demands between 2023 and 2024. April 2024 recorded peak power demands ranging from 3809 MW to 5447 MW, showcasing an increase compared to April 2023’s range of 3388 MW to 5422 MW.

The release highlighted that during April 2024, peak power demand was higher on 83% of corresponding days compared to April 2023, with differences of up to 32%. This emphasizes the substantial effect of weather on power consumption.

Looking ahead, Delhi anticipates crossing the 8,000 MW mark for peak power demand during the summer of 2024, potentially reaching up to 8200 MW, exceeding last year’s peak of 7438 MW. BRPL and BYPL areas are expected to see peak demands of 3679 MW and 1857 MW, respectively, during this period.

To manage this increased demand, BSES discoms have implemented various measures including long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and utilization of green power sources. Around 2100 MW of green power, including solar, wind, and waste-to-energy, will contribute to meeting the city’s power needs during the summer months.

These efforts are crucial in ensuring a reliable power supply for approximately 50 lakh consumers and around 2 crore residents across South, West, East, and Central Delhi. Technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are also being leveraged to predict power demand accurately, supporting the goal of maintaining a steady and uninterrupted power supply.
