Several vehicles were submerged in various parts of the city, and important routes were blocked due to uprooted trees. Commuters faced major delays, with many arriving late to work or college. The relentless downpour has brought the city to a standstill.
At Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1, flight operations have been suspended after the terminal’s roof collapsed amid the heavy rain, resulting in two injuries and one fatality. So far, 16 departure flights and 12 arrival flights have been cancelled. Delhi experienced 150 mm of rainfall between 2:30 AM and 5:30 AM, marking one of the wettest spells of the year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued showers with thunderstorms and winds of 20-40 km/h for the next two hours. An orange alert has been issued for the city until June 29.
The Azad Market underpass turned into a scene of chaos as a bus full of passengers got stuck due to severe waterlogging. This incident highlighted the severity of the disruptions caused by the monsoon rains across the city.
The heavy rain, while offering relief from the sweltering heat, has resulted in significant waterlogging. Visuals shared by news agency ANI on social media platform X show inundated roads and long traffic jams. Many residents have also posted images and videos of the waterlogged streets on their social media accounts.
On Thursday, heavy rain brought Delhi’s temperature down to 35.4 degrees Celsius, with the city recording 5.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM. However, this also led to significant traffic congestion and waterlogging. The city’s traffic police received numerous calls about waterlogged streets, traffic jams, and fallen trees, causing inconvenience for commuters.
