Delhi Police’s 8th winter self-defence camp empowers thousands of girls

In a significant effort towards empowering women and fostering a sense of confidence and safety, the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) organized its 8th Winter Self-Defence Camp for the academic year 2023–24. More than 5,924 girls and students actively participated in the camp, which was held at five different venues across Delhi.

The closing ceremony was presided over by K. Jegadesan, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC & SPUNER, and other senior police officers at various venues. The participants, including one senior citizen, Smt. Bhwani Singh, aged 49, and Baby Sharish Fatima, 4 years old, gained valuable self-defence skills during the camp.

The winter camp not only focused on physical training in martial arts but also included sessions on using everyday items like a dupatta, pen, and handbags for self-protection. Additionally, Nukkad Natak (street plays) and gender sensitization programs were conducted at all venues to promote awareness.

The Special Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC, also expressed the commitment of Delhi Police towards ensuring the safety, security, and empowerment of women in the city.
The success of the self-defence training programs, with over 5,46,662 girls and women trained since 2002, reflects the positive impact of these initiatives. The winter camp 2023–24 has not only equipped participants with self-defence skills but also contributed to building a safer and more confident community in Delhi.
