Light rainfall hit parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to elevate its ‘yellow’ alert to a ‘red’ warning. Visuals from early morning showed steady rain across Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram. These rains come just days after heavy downpours in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and other NCR areas earlier this week, which caused flight delays and cancellations on Tuesday.
Forecast for Delhi and NCR
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain at most locations, with moderate to heavy showers at isolated places over the next two to three hours. The department’s nowcast bulletin at 5:55 a.m. indicated that rainfall spells would affect Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, and surrounding areas. The forecast warns of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated spots.
Weather Alert for Uttar Pradesh
For northern Uttar Pradesh, the IMD has issued an orange alert. Several districts, including Bareilly, Lakhimpur, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Bahraich, Sitapur, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, and Maharajganj, are likely to experience heavy showers. Rain or thundershowers are expected at most locations in western Uttar Pradesh, with a few eastern districts also receiving rainfall. The department expects rainfall intensity to ease from August 15.
Nationwide Monsoon Activity
Across India, the monsoon has intensified, prompting alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in multiple states.Very heavy rain may fall in some parts of Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh is expected to get heavy to very heavy showers. Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana will also see heavy rainfall in some locations.
Thunderstorm and Wind Warnings
The IMD has warned that thunderstorms and lightning may occur at some places in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Strong winds of 30-40 kmph could hit Jammu & Kashmir, which may be dangerous for people and buildings. Officials have asked everyone to stay alert and follow safety instructions during this period.
