While millions travel daily on the Delhi Metro, few realise that one of its oldest trains still carries passengers. As the Delhi Metro completed 23 years of operations on Wednesday, the first train inducted into the network in 2002 remains active. The milestone highlights how long-term planning and careful maintenance have helped the metro system age gracefully.
When Delhi Metro Services Began
The Delhi Metro started operations on December 24, 2002. It launched with a small stretch but quickly grew into one of India’s most reliable urban transport systems.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said the network has become a model for mass rapid transit in the country. It credited consistent upgrades and strict maintenance standards for this success.
Story of Train Set TS#01
Train Set TS#01 was the first train to run on the Delhi Metro network. Even after more than two decades, it remains part of the operational fleet.
DMRC said this reflects the durability of the system and the strength of its upkeep practices. The train continues to meet modern safety and performance standards.
How the Train Evolved Over Time
TS#01 began service as a four-coach train. In 2014, DMRC expanded it to six coaches. In 2023, the train grew further to eight coaches to meet rising passenger demand.
Over the years, the train has covered nearly 2.9 million kilometres. It has carried more than 60 million passengers. Its doors have opened around 2.4 million times during service.
Manufacturing and Energy Efficiency
A South Korea-based MRM Consortium manufactured the train. It first arrived in India through Kolkata and later reached Delhi by rail.
The original four-coach train cost about Rs 24 crore. It uses a regenerative braking system. This system recovers nearly 40 per cent of the energy used during operation. It helps cut power consumption and lowers carbon emissions.
Upgrades and Maintenance Record
DMRC has carried out two major overhauls of TS#01. Due to timely maintenance, the train achieved a mean distance between failures of 85,000 km. This is more than double the required standard.
In 2024, the train went through mid-life rehabilitation. DMRC upgraded multiple systems, including passenger information displays, CCTV cameras, emergency alarms, charging points, and fire detection systems.
“TS#01 is a strong example of how proper maintenance and timely upgrades can significantly extend the life of rolling stock while ensuring passenger safety and comfort,” said Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director, Corporate Communications, DMRC.
As Delhi Metro turns 23, TS#01 stands as a moving reminder of how smart design and disciplined maintenance can deliver long-lasting public transport. The train continues to serve passengers while meeting modern expectations.
