The city's lifeline, the Delhi Metro network, has started to see a minor transformation wherein the names of three stations one existing and two under construction have been changed.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the decision on November 16, saying that the revisions are intended to bring in a clearer local identity and make travel easier for passengers.

The popular Metro stop at Pitampura will now have an official name: Madhuban Chowk Metro Station. Even the proposed northern Pitampura station in Q-Block will be more aptly called Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar Metro Station.

Another new facility near VIPS College will be called Haiderpur Metro Station, which has been named to meet the long-pending demand of the local villagers whose land accommodates the station.

The announcement was made at Haiderpur on a day when the sacred Rezang La Shaheed Raj Kalash Yatra arrived there, a moment the Chief Minister termed as a proud display of national honor.

The Red Line Connection

The newly renamed Madhuban Chowk Metro Station, formerly Pitampura, is situated on the Red Line (Line 1) of the Delhi Metro.

The Red Line is the oldest line of the metro and operates between Rithala and Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda). It is expected to be an important interchange point once the new corridors of Phase IV are fully operational.

Has Delhi Metro Renamed Stations Before?

The Delhi Metro has renamed many of its stations, often for reasons of local clarity, to reflect new landmarks, or to honor national heroes.

For instance, Race Course Road Metro Station was renamed to Lok Kalyan Marg. More recently, two stations on the Red Line extension were renamed: Rajendra Nagar was changed to Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar Station, and New Bus Adda was rechristened Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda). These name changes fall within the continuous effort to ensure that station names really serve the travelling public.

A Quick Guide for New Metro Riders

For those new to the Delhi Metro, here is a simple guide to a smooth journey:

Payment: For convenience and discounted travel, buy a Smart Card from any station counter or purchase a single journey token if one intends to travel just once. The Smart Card has a minimum balance requirement.

Security: Be prepared for a quick security check, similar to those at airports, at the entrance of each station, where your bags are scanned.

Navigation: The whole network is color-coded, such as the Red Line, Yellow Line, and Blue Line. To find your shortest route and interchange stations (if needed), use the official Delhi Metro app or online route planners.

Etiquette: Always stand on the right side of the escalator and do not block the way for passengers alighting from the train. Female commuters have women-only coaches, usually the first coach.
