Delhi High Court Seeks Police Response on Wangchuk’s Protest Plea at Jantar Mantar

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday requested the Delhi police to present their stance regarding a plea seeking permission for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and others to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar.
A bench consisting of Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Amit Sharma issued a notice to the police and the Delhi government in response to the plea filed by the Apex Body Leh, asking for their responses.
“Let the response to the petition be filed,” said the bench, scheduling the next hearing for October 22. Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, representing the Delhi Police, stated that there was no urgency in the matter.
The plea argued that the Delhi Police had failed to provide valid grounds for denying the request to stage the protest. Wangchuk and his associates from Ladakh had allegedly been detained by local police at a Delhi border on September 30 while marching to the national capital to demand that Ladakh be included under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. They were later released.
The Sixth Schedule pertains to the administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, designating them as “autonomous districts and autonomous regions.”
