Delhi continued to reel under intense heat on Tuesday as temperatures soared beyond the 40°C mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) extended the Yellow Alert for the national capital till Wednesday, warning of persistent heatwave conditions. This marks Delhi’s first heatwave in April in the last three years.
Heatwave in Delhi: Temperatures Cross 40°C
On Monday, the capital officially recorded its first heatwave of the season as the temperature rose to 40.2 degrees Celsius. Even higher temperatures were recorded at the Ridge and Ayanagar weather stations, reaching 41°C, while the Palam and Lodhi Road stations reported almost 39°C, as per the IMD.
“Three stations- Safdarjung, Ridge, and Ayanagar- recorded heatwave conditions today for the first time in the season. Heatwave conditions are expected to prevail till April 9. After April 10, a decline in temperature is likely to occur over Northwest India, including Delhi,” said the IMD in a release carried by PTI.
Yellow Alert in Place: What It Means
The Yellow Alert warns of moderate heat, which might still be harmful to susceptible individuals, including infants, or those with chronic illnesses. IMD suggests city dwellers stay indoors from direct heat, dress in light-coloured cotton light clothing, and cover their heads with an umbrella or cloth when going outside.
For comparison, Orange Alert is used to denote warmer temperatures and a greater risk of sunborne illnesses among individuals who are out in the sun or doing strenuous outdoor labor. Red Alert means severe heat with a very high likelihood of heatstroke and other heat illnesses, and immediate attention is required.
Upcoming Weather Forecast Shows Relief Ahead
While the current heatwave is likely to last through April 9, the IMD forecasts some relief beginning Thursday. Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to range between 37°C and 39°C on April 11, 12, and 13. The sky is likely to remain partly cloudy during this period, potentially easing the discomfort caused by the high temperatures.
First April Heatwave Since 2022
Delhi usually experiences maximum temperatures over 40°C in the second half of April. But this year, the city crossed the mark a bit earlier than usual. The city had seen a similar heatwave in early April 2022, when the temperature was 41.6°C on April 8.
In 2023 and 2024, Delhi saw no heat waves in April despite the mercury reaching the 40°C level. This year’s pre-monsoon heatwave highlights the growing uncertainty of weather patterns and the need for timely warnings and precautions.
Citizens are advised to exercise caution, drink plenty of water, and avoid venturing out in the middle of the day when the city goes through this unseasonal heatwave.
