The court issued notices to ABVP’s new president Aryan Maan and NSUI’s vice president Rahul Jhansla, PTI reported.
The Delhi High Court on Friday pulled up newly elected Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) leaders for using luxury cars like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, and even JCBs during election campaigns. The court issued notices to ABVP’s new president, Aryan Maan, and NSUI’s vice president Rahul Jhansla, PTI reported.
Advocate Prashant Manchanda, the petitioner, submitted several photographs and news reports to the Delhi High Court, claiming that candidates had violated judicial orders and the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations during the Delhi University student elections.
After examining the visuals, the HC bench noted multiple violations in the ongoing campaigns. Taking cognizance of the issue, the court issued notices to the student candidates and sought their responses, scheduling the next hearing for November 6, according to PTI.
The Delhi High Court also came down heavily on the use of luxury cars and extravagant displays during campus campaigns. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, remarked, “What can be worse than such kind of campaigns in students union elections. The use of JCBs, big and luxury cars, four wheelers, this is unknown. From where do they get such big cars -- Bentley, Rolls Royce and Ferraris? How are the students getting this? We haven't even heard of these cars.”
The court further observed that student elections, whether at Delhi University or affiliated colleges, had become an annual event marked by worrying practices, which it described as a “cause of concern for every responsible institution and citizen.”
ABVP candidate Aryan Maan secured the DUSU president’s post with 28,821 votes, defeating NSUI’s Joslyn Nandita Choudhary, who polled 12,645 votes. The Left-backed AISA-SFI candidate Anjali came third with 5,385 votes. Maan’s winning margin stood at more than 16,000 votes, giving the ABVP a clear edge.
After the results, newly elected president Aryan Maan expressed his gratitude to Delhi University students.
He said, “I feel very nice. My dream for the past 5 years has been fulfilled. Today I want to thank every student of the Delhi University because of whom I won with a margin of 16,000 votes. We again gave a befitting reply to the NSUI and won 3-1 against them. There are many dark spots on the campus for female students; we will get lights installed in those dark spots.”
BJP national president JP Nadda lauded the ABVP’s strong performance in the polls. In a post on X, he said, “Guided by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, the ABVP has always inspired the youth with a spirit of nationalism and selfless service.” He added that the victory showed young students supported the message of Nation First.
Political observers pointed out that ABVP’s strong organisational base and year-round presence on campus played a big role in its win. A sharp social media campaign and a collective strategy further strengthened its chances. This helped ABVP win three out of the four central panel posts, leaving NSUI with only one.
ABVP’s performance comes as a boost for the RSS-affiliated organisation, which now holds the president, secretary, and joint secretary posts in the central panel.
