In a decisive move to strengthen sanitation and curb dust pollution, the Delhi Government has approved a one-time grant of ₹500 crore to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), with a clear mandate: tackle dust, improve waste management, and restore public confidence in the city’s civic systems.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said cleanliness remains the government’s “top priority” and stressed there would be “no compromise” on implementation. The funds will address immediate sanitation needs — from clearing accumulated waste and paying long-pending dues to waste management agencies, to plugging recurring gaps in garbage collection and transportation.

A significant portion of the allocation will tackle one of Delhi’s persistent irritants: dust. Minor road repairs, pothole filling and patchwork on damaged stretches are expected to reduce loose dust, particularly during the dry months.

Gupta instructed the MCD to use the funds strictly for approved purposes, with adherence to financial norms, regular monitoring, and timely submission of utilisation certificates. She also announced structured annual support of ₹300 crore for the coming years to reinforce long-term sanitation infrastructure.

The plan includes procuring modern sanitation equipment, installing waste-processing machines in every Assembly constituency, and setting up new waste-to-energy plants alongside upgrades to existing facilities. Improved systems for segregation and collection of wet and dry waste, she noted, will be key to encouraging citizen participation and sustaining cleanliness across the capital.

Linking the initiative to the broader goal of building a “Viksit Delhi,” Gupta emphasised that unchecked waste and dust are not just civic failures — they are major contributors to Delhi’s air pollution crisis.

A high-level review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat on Friday saw senior ministers, the Delhi Mayor, municipal leadership and top bureaucrats come together to chart out the plan’s implementation, underscoring the government’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier capital.
