Delhi keeps on suffocating under the long-time smog, the city is preparing for a marginal fall in minimum temperatures in the coming days even though its air quality is still in the ‘very poor’ category.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted mainly fair weather with fog and haze in the morning, while Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has made an announcement of a first-of-its-kind intervention, artificial rain through cloud seeding, to combat the capital’s deteriorating pollution issue.

IMD Forecast: Clear Skies, Minimum Dropping

According to the IMD’s latest forecast, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to hover between 31 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could drop to 17 degrees Celsius–19 degrees Celsius over the next few days, marking a gradual dip as winter inches closer.

Skies are likely to remain mainly clear with mist or haze during morning hours from October 23 to 25, before turning partly cloudy by October 26, especially towards the evening.

During October 27–29, the city can experience partly cloudy skies with mist and haze persisting during mornings. Winds will range from northwesterly to northeasterly with speeds of 5–10 kmph, providing calm conditions, a factor that tends to retain pollutants near the surface.

Delhi to Witness Artificial Rain on October 29

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday stated that Delhi is set for its first artificial rainfall through cloud seeding. Arrangements have been made for the first time in Delhi to cause artificial rain using cloud seeding. Today, it has been successfully tested in the Burari area, Gupta stated in an X post.

She further said that the India Meteorological Department has forecasted beneficial weather from October 28 to 30, with October 29 being the most probable day for artificial rainfall in the city.

This program is not just historic from a technical point of view but is also going to create a scientific means to fight pollution in Delhi. The government’s aim is to provide the capital’s air with purity and make the environment balanced with this innovation,” Gupta stated, wishing the best to cabinet colleague Manjinder Singh Sirsa and all the officials on board.

Air Quality Deteriorates Further

Despite the upcoming artificial rain attempt, pollution levels in the city continue to remain a concern. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI on Thursday stood at 305, categorized as very poor.

Among the monitoring stations, Anand Vihar recorded a severe 410, the highest in the city. Out of 38 monitoring locations, 23 reported ‘very poor’ air quality, while 14 fell under the ‘poor’ category.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has already implemented Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the National Capital Region (NCR) to limit further decline.
