Delhi: Despite renovation, the Pragati Maidan tunnel remains a potential life threat

The Tunnel of Delhi’s Pragati Maidan made a re-entry last week. But despite the renovation being undertaken, the tunnel continues to show signs of waterlogging.

As reported by TimesNow, spots were visible from where water was leaking in the 1.2 km stretch of the tunnel connecting Supreme court from Noida.

During the reopening of the tunnel, the Public Works Department (PWD) claimed that it was now fully operational for traffic and that issues with water leakage and seepage had been addressed.

Meanwhile, some parts of the tunnel still harbored some spots where the water was being leaked. As a result, it has the potential to damage the road. As per Indian express report, the water leakage was comparatively low at three points. But the situation in parking which is connected to the Bhairon Marg underpass had a lot of waterlogging. Which is currently is not open to the public.

Bumby At Several Points

The issue of water seepage wasn’t the only problem plaguing the renovated tunnel. The surface of the stretch too was bumpy at several points. Accompanied by the cracks seen on the road at different sections. In some parts, the surfaces were found to be broken. Which gave sudden jolt to commuters specifically commuters with bikes.

About Pragati Maidan Tunnel

Constructed as the part of Pragati Maidan Integrated Corridor, it was touted to be Delhi’s widest underground tunnel with 5 underpasses added. Which was inaugurated in the year 2022.

However, after few months, the issue of water leakage and seepage started, harming the road. Making the tunnel a “potential threat to human lives”.

Also leading to the issuance of Rs.500 crore legal notice by the PWD against Larsen & Toubro company who constructed the tunnel.

After temporary closures, the PWD started the repair of the road. Which was again followed by the re-work this March. Which later it finished last week.
