Russian President Vladimir Putin is in New Delhi for his first visit to India in four years, marking a key moment in India-Russia relations. The two leaders are meeting for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit to discuss trade, defence, energy, and strategic cooperation. Modi and Putin: A Strong Personal and Professional Bond
During a joint press briefing, PM Modi praised Putin for his leadership and long-term commitment to India:
“Fifteen years ago, in 2010, our partnership was granted the status of a Special Privileged Strategic Partnership. For the past two and a half decades, he (President Putin) has nurtured this relationship with his leadership and vision. His leadership, under all circumstances, has elevated our ties to new heights. I express my heartfelt gratitude to President Putin, my friend, for this deep friendship and unwavering commitment to India.”

The two leaders share a history of frequent interactions, including five telephone conversations in 2025 and a meeting earlier this year at the SCO Heads of State Council Meeting in Tianjin, China.
Key Agreements Signed During the Summit
During the talks, India and Russia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the port and shipping sector. This agreement is expected to strengthen maritime trade links and improve logistics for bilateral trade.

Additionally, PM Modi announced a program to expand India-Russia trade until 2030, highlighting both nations’ commitment to economic collaboration.
Tourism Boost for Russian Nationals
In a move to promote tourism, India also announced a 30-day free e-visa facility for Russian nationals. The new measure aims to encourage more Russian tourists to visit India, supporting cultural exchange and bilateral relations.
Economic and Strategic Priorities
PM Modi emphasized the importance of taking the India-Russia economic partnership to new heights, “Taking India-Russia economic partnership to new heights is our common priority.”
The discussions also focused on energy cooperation, defence projects, and mobility of skilled labor. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to maintaining a strong strategic partnership amid global challenges.
The meeting between Modi and Putin is being closely watched by the US and Europe. These nations have urged India to reduce its energy purchases from Russia and have encouraged Putin to seek a resolution to the war in Ukraine.
