A devastating incident occurred late Saturday night in Arpora, North Goa, when a gas cylinder exploded inside a nightclub, leading to a large fire. The blast took place near the kitchen around 1 a.m. and caused the deaths of at least 25 people, all of whom were staff members working at the club.
Seven others were injured, with one person suffering severe burns of more than 60%. Authorities confirmed that only two of the victims died from burn injuries; the rest lost their lives due to inhaling thick smoke.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said, “Most of the dead were the club’s kitchen workers, and included three women.” He also revealed that “three to four tourists” were among those who died.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his sorrow over the disaster, describing it as a “deeply saddening” accident. He mentioned that he had spoken with Chief Minister Sawant and offered complete assistance. The Prime Minister also announced financial aid—Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for each injured person through the PMNRF.

Goa Police reported that the explosion occurred near the kitchen at around 1 a.m. A gas cylinder is believed to have burst, sending flames rapidly across the building. Due to how strong and sudden the blast was, many staff members had almost no time to flee.
Fire engines reached the nightclub quickly, and firefighters battled the flames for nearly two hours before they could control the situation. However, because the fire spread so quickly through the crowded and compact interior, many workers were unable to escape.
Initial investigations suggest that a gas leak during regular kitchen cleaning and closing activities may have triggered the explosion. Several staff members were reportedly arranging and tidying the kitchen area when the blast occurred. Officials say a full forensic examination will help determine the exact cause.
A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory has collected evidence from the scene. The district administration has also begun an official inquiry to understand how the incident unfolded.
Nightclub in Gao sealed; owners questioned
Authorities have closed the nightclub as part of the investigation. Police are questioning the owners and managers about safety measures, emergency exits, and whether the establishment complied with fire and gas safety norms.
The Director General of Police said the inquiry will thoroughly review the club’s safety arrangements, including gas line setups, fire-fighting systems, and evacuation protocols.

After the tragic fire at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, a district-wide fire safety audit will be carried out for all clubs in the area. Local MLA Michael Lobo confirmed that all bodies have been recovered and stated that strict fire safety checks will now be enforced. Clubs that cannot provide proper fire safety documents may have their licences revoked.
