Cyclone ‘Shakti,’ classified as a severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea that brought incessant rain over parts of western India over the past few days, moved further south-southwestwards on Sunday.
IMD Report Over Cyclone Shakti
As per the IMD, Shakti is expected to continue to move south-southwestwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning. “Thereafter it will recurve and travel almost eastwards over the west-central & adjacent northwest Arabian Sea and further weaken into a depression by 7th October forenoon,” said IMD.

As per the India Meteorological Department’s Sunday night tropical cyclone advisory released at 9 PM, cyclone Shakti has shifted south-southwestwards by 7 kmph in the past 6 hours and was centered over the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea, close to latitude 19.9°N and longitude 60.6°E at about 11:30 pm on October 5. The storm is around 210 km southeast of Ras Al Hadd (Oman), 220 km east of Masirah (Oman), 780 km southwest of Karachi (Pakistan), 850 km west-southwest of Naliya, and 850 km west of Dwarka.

Gusty Winds Along the Western Coast
Squally wind speeds of 50-60 km per hour, gusting to 70 km per hour, will prevail over west-central & northwestern adjacent areas of the Arabian Sea from midnight of Oct 6 and increase to 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, by the morning of Oct 7, it stated.
Wind speeds of 35-45 km per hour, gusting to 55 km per hour, are highly likely to continue prevailing over the northeastern Arabian Sea and along & off the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts until the morning of Oct 6.

IMD on Sunday forecast sea conditions to be very high over the northwestern and west-central Arabian Sea until the morning of Oct 6. Sea conditions will be very likely to be rough along and off the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts until this morning.

Rainfall in Parts of India
A day after relentless rain pounded West Bengal’s Darjeeling, taking the lives of at least 23 people and injuring a host of others, the IMD on Monday declared a yellow alert over parts of eastern India as heavy rainfall persists over West Bengal, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, and Tripura.
Heavy rain is predicted in the sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 6. The IMD also predicts light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at all places, along with scattered thunderstorms and wind speeds of 30-40 kmph, in East India during the next 3-4 days.
