According to the India Meteorological Department, Cyclone Senyar, which formed over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining areas of Northeast Indonesia, crossed the Indonesian coast on Wednesday morning at 70–80 kmph with gusts up to 90 kmph.

The system was located over the coastal area of northeast Indonesia approximately 80 km east of Kuta Makmur (Indonesia), 280 km west of George Town (Malaysia), 580 km southeast of Nancowry in the Nicobar Islands, and about 730 km southeast of Car Nicobar.

Projected Track of Cyclone Senyar

IMD further said that Senyar is most likely to continue to move west-southwestwards and maintain the cyclonic storm intensity till Thursday morning. Thereafter, it is likely to turn eastwards and gradually weaken during the next 24 hours.

Second Weather System Over Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure area, well-marked, continues over the southwest Bay of Bengal, extending between Southeast Sri Lanka and the Equatorial Indian Ocean. The system persisted in the same region on Wednesday.

IMD predicts that it will move north-northwest and intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours. It may become further severe as it traverses across the southwest Bay of Bengal to the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastlines during the subsequent 48 hours.

Heavy Rainfall Warning

With the conjunction of these weather systems, widespread rainfall is likely over many regions. Heavy to very heavy showers are likely to happen over:

  • Nicobar Islands
  • Andaman Islands
  • Puducherry and Tamil Nadu
  • Kerala
  • Andhra Pradesh

Wind Speed Forecast Amid Cyclone Senyar

Strong winds are also expected across the Strait of Malacca, Malaysia, parts of the South Andaman Sea, areas near the Nicobar Islands, Indonesia, and Thailand. Gale-force winds of 70–80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph, are likely in these regions. Wind speeds are forecasted to decrease gradually by Thursday morning to 50–60 kmph. From Friday morning: 40–50 kmph, blowing to 60 kmph during next 12 hours, with further reduction later.
