The India Meteorological Department confirmed the impending Cyclone on the east coast of India, issuing a warning about a “severe cyclonic storm” to hit the coastal areas in a few days.
IMD Shares Update on Cyclone Montha
In the early hours of October 26, the India Meteorological Department shared an update on the depression that was observed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. In their update, it shared that the depression moved west-northwestwards at 8 kmph in the past few hours; 550 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 850 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 890 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 890 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh) and 970 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha).
It further added that the depression is likely to intensify on October 26th before turning into a cyclonic storm over the southwest, reaching the west-central Bay of Bengal by 27th morning. It stated that the storm is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28th.
The is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening hours of October 28th. The maximum wind speed of the storm is projected to be from 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

IMD Issues Red Warning for Seven Districts
IMD has issued warnings for 16 out of 30 districts of Andhra Pradesh. Red warnings have been issued for seven districts – Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, and Gajapati. The other 9 districts are still under the yellow warning, with heavy rainfalls expected between October 28 and 29.
Odisha Prepares for Cyclone Montha
Authorities in Odisha have begun preparations to minimise the impact of the cyclone that is due to hit the East Coast in the coming days. Although Odisha is not among the places forecasted to suffer a direct hit, it is still preparing for the predicted rainfall and strong winds between October 27 to 29.
Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management Suresh Pujari assured the people that preparations to minimise any potential damage caused by the impending cyclone are underway. Preparations to evacuate people living in low-lying areas and availability of food grains, essential commodities, and medicines are also in the works.
