Cyclone Montha: Heavy Winds, Coastal Flooding Expected in Andhra and Odisha,Thousands Evacuated, Trains and Flights Cancelled

Cyclone Montha is set to hit the Andhra coast near Kakinada on October 28 with winds up to 110 kmph, prompting red alerts, mass evacuations, and transport suspensions.

Cyclone Montha will hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, close to Kakinada, on Tuesday night or evening (October 28, 2025). The cyclone would impact as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Due to the threat, 16 districts of the state have been put under red alert.

Andhra Pradesh on High Alert Due To Cyclone Montha

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to evacuate residents of vulnerable coastal areas to safety and relocate them to relief centers. Kakinada and Konaseema districts, which are likely to receive the worst hit, have witnessed evacuation of close to 10,000 residents, including 126 pregnant women, who have been relocated to safety in hospitals. The government of Odisha has also started evacuating people from eight districts in the southern part of the state, where a red alert has been sounded following deteriorating weather conditions.

Path and Location of Cyclone Montha

At 2:30 a.m. on October 28, Cyclone Montha lay above the west-central Bay of Bengal, 230 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 310 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 370 km south of Visakhapatnam, and 570 km south-southwest of Gopalpur. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Chennai informed that the system will move north-northwestwards and strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm during Tuesday morning. In the evening or late at night, it is “very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph,” according to RMC update.

Trains Cancelled En Route Throughout Coastal Andhra Due To Cyclone Montha

In anticipation of the cyclone, the rail authorities have cancelled over 65 passenger and express trains running through coastal Andhra Pradesh. They include prominent junctions such as Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, and Bhimavaram. The cancellations will continue to be effective from October 28 to 29.
Authorities have explained that train services will be started only after checking for safety once the weather improves. The East Coast Railway has also cancelled various train journeys along the Odisha–Andhra corridor as a precautionary measure.

Flights Suspended, Travel Advisory Issued Due to Cyclone Montha

Air transport has also been severely affected because of the cyclone. IndiGo and Air India Express have suspended all flights due on October 28 at Visakhapatnam Airport owing to unsafe weather conditions.
Passengers have been asked by authorities to get updates on flights before they head to the airport, as operations are likely to be suspended until further notice. 

Landfall of Cyclone Montha off the coast of Kakinada on October 28 will lead to heavy rain, heavy winds, and coastal inundation. Large-scale evacuations have been initiated by the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, while train and flight services are still suspended to maintain public safety.
