Cyclone Montha made landfall on Tuesday evening, striking the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, just south of Kakinada.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system that was earlier described as a “severe cyclonic storm” has now reduced in strength to a cyclonic storm.
At the time of landfall, wind speeds reached 90–100 kmph, with gusts touching up to 110 kmph. The IMD warned that Cyclone Montha is expected to cause “extremely” heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana.
The storm’s influence is not limited to these regions. Weather alerts for heavy rainfall have also been issued in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
Current Situation of Cyclone Montha
On Tuesday, Cyclone Montha crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast, bringing severe weather conditions and disrupting daily life in many areas. Neighboring Odisha also felt the impact, with 15 districts reporting major disturbances.
The landfall process began around 7 p.m., according to the IMD. The storm system, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, moved inland through the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, close to Kakinada.
The IMD reported that Cyclone Montha made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 90 to 100 kmph, and gusts reaching up to 110 kmph.
