Cyclone Dana: Kolkata Expects Heavy Rains, IMD Issues Urgent Red Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for Kolkata as Cyclone Dana approaches, with the landfall process expected to commence on the night of October 24 and continue into the morning of October 25. In light of this, the IMD has placed the city under an orange alert for heavy rain.

Weather Forecast and Alerts

Today’s forecast indicates a generally cloudy sky with heavy rainfall expected throughout the day. The maximum temperature is predicted to reach 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will hover around 24 degrees Celsius.

Red Alerts in Surrounding Areas

In addition to the orange alert for Kolkata, several regions in West Bengal, including East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and South 24 Parganas, have been placed under a red alert due to expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Anticipated Impacts of Cyclone Dana

The IMD has outlined potential impacts from Cyclone Dana, which may include:

  1. Property Damage: Significant damage to thatched houses and the risk of rooftops blowing off, along with the displacement of unattached metal sheets and temporary hoardings.
  2. Waterlogging and Flooding: Low-lying areas may experience waterlogging, leading to localized flooding of roads and the closure of underpasses, particularly in urban settings.
  3. Visibility Issues: Heavy rainfall may result in occasional reductions in visibility.
  4. Traffic Disruptions: Increased travel times and incidents are expected due to waterlogged roads and poor visibility in major cities.
  5. Impact on Marine Transport: There may be disruptions to marine and inland water transportation, including small boats and trawlers.
  6. Damage to Infrastructure: Power and communication lines may be affected, along with potential damage to horticulture and standing crops from inundation and strong winds.

Flight Operations Suspended

To ensure the safety of passengers and airport staff, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the suspension of flight operations at Kolkata Airport. The halt will be in effect from 6:00 p.m. on October 24 until 9:00 a.m. on October 25, 2024. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard all equipment, navigational aids, and infrastructure amid the impending cyclone.

As the city braces for Cyclone Dana, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local agencies.
