Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ approaches Gujarat, ports on alert

The approaching cyclone ‘Biparjoy’, currently centred about 900 km south-southwest of Gujarat’s coastal Porbandar district, has led to precautions being taken in the coastal region. Fishermen have been called back from the deep sea, and ports have been advised to raise a Distant Warning signal (DW II), officials said on Thursday.
The first cyclone of the Arabian Sea this year is predicted to cause light showers and thunderstorms along Gujarat’s coastline.
Manorama Mohanty, the Director of IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad, reported that due to the cyclone, wind speeds could reach between 45 and 55 knots on June 10, 11, and 12, potentially hitting 65 knots. The cyclone is expected to bring light rains and thunderstorms to the coastal regions, including south Gujarat and Saurashtra.
