Congress MP questions govt’s decision on Rs 2,000 notes

In a recent development following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) surprising announcement to withdraw the circulation of Rs 2,000 currency notes, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh has directed his criticism towards the government, demanding an explanation for the introduction of the now-withdrawn denomination.
The RBI declared last Friday that the Rs 2,000 currency notes would be phased out, giving the public until September 30 to either deposit the notes into their accounts or exchange them at banks. Furthermore, the central bank directed financial institutions to halt the issuance of the Rs 2,000 notes immediately.

Responding to the RBI’s decision, Singh addressed reporters in Indore on Tuesday, expressing his concerns. “First, they (the central government) should explain why these notes were introduced,” he stated.

Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Madhya Pradesh announced a significant decision ahead of the Assembly elections. They declared that all unauthorised colonies established prior to December 31, 2022, would be regularised.
Former Chief Minister Singh dismissed the state government’s announcement as “meaningless,” questioning the lack of an official notification regarding the regularisation of unauthorised colonies. He commented, “They have made such announcements a thousand times. Where is the notification to regularise unauthorised colonies?”

Singh also addressed recent statements made by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who expressed remorse for any mistakes he may have made and declared his heartfelt connection to the local people. Singh responded positively to Scindia’s apology, stating, “It is good that he has sought an apology after realising his mistakes.”
A video capturing Scindia seeking forgiveness with folded hands and making these remarks at an event in Shivpuri has since gone viral on various social media platforms.
