The Indian National Congress on Wednesday sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued silence in the face of repeated assertions by former US President Donald Trump, who once again claimed credit for preventing a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan.

Donald Trump Takes Credit For India-Pakistan Ceasefire

At a White House event on Tuesday night, Trump boasted about “stopping wars” between several countries, including India and Pakistan. “They shot down five planes… it was back and forth,” Trump said. “I called them and said, ‘Listen, no more trade. If you do this, you’re not going to be good.’ They’re both powerful nuclear nations… and I stopped it.”

This was not an isolated remark — it marked the 25th time in just over two months that Trump has publicly stated he played a decisive role in de-escalating the situation. Yet, Prime Minister Modi has remained conspicuously silent, prompting Congress leaders to demand answers.

“President Trump reaches the silver jubilee, the quarter-century mark on his claims. He has trumpeted 25 times in the last 73 days but the Prime Minister of India is totally quiet,” said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh in a strongly-worded post on X. He ended his post by saying, “finding time only to travel abroad and to destabilise democratic institutions at home.

The issue has gained renewed urgency following remarks at the UN Security Council by acting US ambassador Dorothy Shea, who reiterated Trump’s claim that the US played a “key role” in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. She said the US, under Trump’s leadership, had facilitated peaceful resolutions in various global flashpoints, including South Asia.

India Denies US Involvement in India-Pakistan Ceasefire

India’s official position, however, remains unchanged. Speaking at the UN, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, stated that India ceased military operations at Pakistan’s request after achieving its objectives during Operation Sindoor. The operation was launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people. Clashes lasted four days before military activities halted on May 10.

Despite India’s repeated denial of third-party mediation, the US continues to push the narrative of Trump’s diplomatic intervention. Congress is now demanding why the Modi government has failed to set the record straight.

“Modi Govt continues in its refusal to give firm dates for a debate on Pahalgam-Sindoor in Parliament and as the Modi Govt persists in its refusal to commit to a reply by the PM in the debate”, Jairam Ramesh wrote in his post.

The party insists that letting Trump’s narrative go unchallenged could erode India’s image as a sovereign decision-maker.
