Congress’ Harish Chandra Meena Challenges Two-Time BJP MP Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria in Rajasthan’s Tonk-Sawai Madhopur

The Lok Sabha seat of Tonk-Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan will be contested in the second phase of polling on April 26, with Congress’ Harish Chandra Meena challenging BJP’s Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria. Tonk-Sawai Madhopur is traditionally a stronghold for the BJP, having emerged victorious in the last two Lok Sabha elections and aiming to retain the seat this time as well.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria secured 6,44,319 votes (52.2%) in Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, while Namonarayan from the Indian National Congress received 5,33,028 votes (43.2%). Similarly, in 2014, Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria won with 5,48,179 votes (52.6%), defeating Congress’ Mohammad Azharuddin, who received 4,12,868 votes (39.6%).

Speaking to ANI, Jaunapuria expressed confidence in the BJP’s performance, stating, “The Prime Minister has united everyone. The schemes are reaching every house of the nation… A lot of work has been done. And things have happened that have never been done before… The workers have a lot of enthusiasm…”

Meanwhile, Harish Chandra Meena of the Congress tweeted, “Tonk Sawai Madhopur’s resolution, Congress is the only option…” He highlighted a public meeting in Malpura town attended by party leaders, expressing certainty in the Congress Party’s victory.

Rajasthan is conducting its Lok Sabha elections in two phases, with polling for 12 seats held on April 19 and the remaining 13 seats, including Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, scheduled for April 26. In the 2019 polls, the BJP won 24 out of 25 seats, with the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party winning one. In the 2014 elections, the BJP swept all 25 parliamentary constituencies in the state.
