Congress and AAP together to contest Chandigarh mayor elections on January 18

The Aam Admi Party and the Congress have decided to jointly run for mayor of Chandigarh, which is a minor but noteworthy move. Following discussions between the two parties, Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal revealed that the AAP would run for the mayoralty and the Congress for the other two positions.

“Lok Sabha elections are to come later; before that, the corporation elections have come. We have been discussing the same and it has been decided that AAP will contest for the post of mayor and Congress will contest for the post of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The result of this will be that our candidate from the INDIA bloc will be successful with a good majority,” he said.

“On national issues, we know that there is agreement between Congress and AAP. Meetings have been held between different parties in which a consensus has been reached. At this time, everyone has gathered together to save the feelings of democracy,” he added.

The Chandigarh mayoral elections will be contested by 35 council members in total. BJP currently has the support of one MP and fourteen council members. In contrast, the Congress has seven council members and the Aam Aadmi Party has thirteen. There is one councilor for Shiromani Akali Dal. A majority of 18 votes is needed, with the BJP having a maximum of 15 votes. But if the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party unite, they will receive a total of 20 votes. The alliance forms in the midst of attempts by the Congress and the AAP to form an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Earlier, Delhi hosted a meeting between Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
