UP CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered a strict crackdown on illegal immigrants across the state. He has asked all district magistrates to identify foreigners living without valid documents and take immediate action under existing laws. His office said law and order, national security and social harmony remain the state’s highest priorities.
According to the official statement, “The chief minister has directed that each district administration ensure the identification of illegal immigrants living in their area and initiate action as per the rules.” The government said it will not tolerate any kind of illegal activity that threatens public safety or demographic integrity.
The statement, quoted by PTI, added, “The chief minister has also directed that temporary detention centres be established in each district to house infiltrators.” These centres will hold foreign nationals until the authorities finish the verification process. Once the identity and nationality of the detainees are confirmed, the state will deport them to their home countries under standard procedures.
The new directive instructs every district to prepare temporary detention facilities. These centres will hold individuals who are suspected of illegally entering India or overstaying their visas. Officials will complete background checks and confirm citizenship status before moving forward with deportation.
The Uttar Pradesh government said foreigners with a valid status will be released, while those who violate immigration rules will face action. UP shares an open border with Nepal, which allows free movement for citizens of both nations. People from all other countries must undergo mandatory checks.
The push against illegal immigration comes at a time when a nationwide Special Integrated Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is underway. The process is taking place in 12 states and union territories, including Uttar Pradesh. Authorities will publish the final updated voter list on February 7, 2026.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
The Election Commission began printing and training on October 28. The Enumeration Phase is ongoing from November 4 to December 4. Draft rolls will be published on December 9, followed by a claims and objections window until January 8, 2026. Verification hearings will continue up to January 31, 2026.
Opposition parties have strongly criticised the SIR exercise. They allege that the process aims to remove voters from underprivileged communities from the electoral list. The government denies these claims and says the revision ensures clean and accurate voter rolls.
Policy observers say the timing of the immigration crackdown is significant. With the SIR underway and the 2026 final roll approaching, verifying citizenship and voter eligibility becomes a critical issue.
Analysts say the move allows UP authorities to ensure that only eligible residents remain on the list, while illegal immigrants do not influence demographic data or public services. Some experts argue that the creation of detention centres indicates a long-term framework for monitoring cross-border movement and strengthening internal security.
