The Supreme Court of India has joined the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), which will now provide real-time data regarding the status of cases, according to an announcement made by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday. The platform will make it easier to track the status of cases, according to the CJI, who claimed that the move was made to promote accountability and transparency.
“It is a historic day. It is a unique platform that is developed by the NIC and in house team of the Supreme Court. Now, at the click of a button you can see real-time information on the pendency of cases, year-wise, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, and number of cases decided quorum-wise,” he said.
The Supreme Court’s data has been added to the NJDG portal as part of the court’s “open data policy,” according to the CJI, as a step “to bring transparency and accountability in the judicial domain.” On the NJDG portal, the entire database will be routinely updated, he said. “The NJDG portal is a national repository of information pertaining to cases started, continued, and resolved by the courts across the length and breadth of the nation. One can now access case-related data, statistics, such as the institution, pendency, and disposition of cases, case types, and the Supreme Court of India’s year-by-year breakdown, at the click of a button, the CJI explained.
