Chhattisgarh launches ‘Bajrangbali Akhada Protsahan Yojana’

The state of Chhattisgarh is taking decisive steps to protect and promote traditional wrestling arenas, known as ‘akhadas’. Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel announced the launch of the ‘Bajrangbali Akhada Protsahan Yojana’ to revitalise and nurture the wrestling culture in the region. The initiative also aims to sharpen the skills of budding wrestlers, setting them on a path to achieve national and international acclaim.
Furthermore, to offer structured training to emerging talents, a state-level wrestling academy will be inaugurated in the capital, Raipur. This academy will serve as a cradle for nurturing wrestlers and enhancing their potential.
Previously, Chief Minister Baghel also championed the cause of other traditional sports like ‘Mallakhamb’. With the Bajrangbali Protsahan Yojana, his intention is clear – rejuvenate the rich wrestling tradition of Chhattisgarh and create an enabling environment for athletes to thrive.
Traditional akhadas, once bustling with wrestlers showcasing their moves and skills, have seen a decline over the years. The Protsahan Yojana will breathe life back into these arenas, ensuring that they once again become hubs of sporting activity. The hope is that the state will produce more talented wrestlers who will represent both Chhattisgarh and India on global platforms.
India, and specifically Chhattisgarh, boasts a rich wrestling heritage with moves like ‘Dhobi Pachad’ and ‘Dhak’ becoming synonymous with the sport. Such traditions underscore the deep-rooted significance of wrestling in the cultural fabric of the region. The chief minister’s announcements aim to preserve and reinvigorate this legacy.
Of special note is the timing of the announcement, which coincided with ‘Nag Panchami’ – a festival often associated with wrestling matches. The event witnesses enthusiastic participation, with people thronging akhadas. With the inception of the Bajrangbali Akhada Protsahan Yojana, next year’s Nag Panchami promises to be an even more vibrant celebration for the people of Chhattisgarh.
