A cartoon uploaded on the social media site X by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chhattisgarh, referring to the current controversy surrounding the arrest of two Christian nuns in the State, was met with backlash and prompted the party to remove the post on Saturday (August 2, 2025).

Cartoon Depicts Congress Leaders, Gets Taken Down

A cartoon shared on social media platform X by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chhattisgarh, which had called for the current controversy regarding the arrest of two Christian nuns in the State, had to be deleted by the party after it generated a backlash on Saturday (August 2, 2025).

The cartoon showing Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and K.C. Venugopal bowing to nuns and also as well-wishers of those who are indulging in human trafficking and religious conversions was shared and removed within a short span of time on Saturday morning (August 2, 2025) following complaints that it was a ridicule of Christianity.

Arrest of Nuns Sparks Political Firestorm

The arrest of nuns Vandana Francis and Preeti Mary, along with a Narayanpur resident, in Durg on July 25, created a political uproar.

“The arrest of the nuns was wrong and illegal. Action was taken against them on the basis of purported statements alleging human trafficking and conversion by women who have since denied the incidents of trafficking and conversion in media. The Kerala BJP president has also opposed this action. The BJP government has been exposed in this matter. The BJP has removed this poster fearing [electoral] losses in Kerala,” Congress spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla said.

The post had been deleted because “it was not the right subject”, Somesh Pandey, co-convenor of the BJP’s IT cell in Chhattisgarh said, without elaborating further.

Congress Hits Out, BJP Maintains Silence

The removed cartoon also drew a sharp criticism from the Opposition Congress in the State. The party stated that the BJP had to remove the post lest they suffer electoral losses in Kerala; the nuns are from the southern State.

A few other BJP spokespersons refused to comment on the issue, with the party’s State president Kiran Singh Deo not available for comment.
