Chandigarh civic contracts favor politicians’ Kin: Impact on city’s development

Chandigarh is called the City Beautiful, but its condition is continuously deteriorating. The city is lagging behind in cleanliness system. The residents of Chandigarh are also facing problems regarding the dumping ground. Not only this, most of the roads of the city are broken. The condition of the parks is bad. Apart from this, people are not getting drinking water. The same people have seen the drainage system of Chandigarh during the rainy season. How Chandigarh was flooded and even people’s vehicles were submerged.
Seeing all these problems, the question that comes to the minds of the residents is why there is no development in the city. Actually, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation gives contracts for most of the work in Chandigarh, and the corporation has given contracts to most of the leaders of Chandigarh, their relatives, journalists and relatives of big officials. This is the reason why Chandigarh is not able to develop. If the local residents are to be believed, the city has the same problems which are not being solved for the last several years. These include roads, water, electricity, sewerage, drainage system and also the horticulture department.
Regarding this, social worker Rameshwar Giri says that Chandigarh was a beautiful city, but for the last some time, the condition of Chandigarh is bad.
The reason for this is that Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has given the contract of development work of Chandigarh to such people from whom the corporation cannot question much. Most of the contracts in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation are either with politicians or journalists or relatives of high officials. That is why the city is not able to develop. Giri says that there should be a detailed investigation of this matter.
Samaj Adhikar Kalyanak Party president Shambhu Banerjee said that he had written a letter to Chandigarh Advisor regarding the performance of Municipal Corporation. After that Vigilance had also started investigation, but the Municipal Corporation contracts are with the relatives of big officers, politicians, journalists.
Therefore, Vigilance department has also put this investigation on hold. He says that he had also recorded his statement with Vigilance in this matter, but till date no action has been taken on it. He demanded that it should be investigated by a big agency like CBI.
