“Challenging Times: Striving for Strength and Peace,” Says Manipur DGP

Manipur’s Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh emphasized the state’s commitment to restoring peace and normalcy during a press briefing on Saturday. Reflecting on the current situation, he acknowledged the challenges faced by law enforcement, stating that they are addressing these issues with the best resources available and the cooperation of various security agencies.

After attending the 133rd Manipur Police Raising Day, DGP Singh remarked, “These are indeed challenging times, but we are working hard to tackle the situation effectively. We are committed to restoring peace and normalcy as quickly as possible.” He noted that in the past year and a half, there has been a noticeable reduction in violence, casualties, and injuries, although sporadic incidents of arson and firing still occur. “All security forces remain vigilant, and we are dedicated to preventing any escalation,” he added.

Singh also highlighted that some issues could have been managed more effectively with better public cooperation. “As the head of the police, I urge communities from all sides to come forward with suggestions and engage in dialogue. The only way to resolve these problems is through peaceful discussions. We consider ourselves a civilian-friendly force, taking into account the needs and concerns of the public. There have been times when security forces have shown restraint to avoid causing harm to innocent civilians,” he explained.

In a noteworthy development, on October 15, elected representatives from the Kuki-Zo-Hmar, Meitei, and Naga communities convened to discuss the current scenario in Manipur, calling on citizens to reject violence. This marked the first direct talks among these groups, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to facilitating dialogue among the fractured communities.

The discussions, organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs, took place in the national capital, attended by senior officials as well as MLAs and ministers from the Kuki-Zo-Hmar, Meitei, and Naga factions.
