The Union Home Ministry notified Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules on Monday (11 March 2024) evening. Parliament had on 11 December 2019 passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) which amended the Citizenship Act of 1955.
Under CAA Indian citizenship will be provided via a fast track process to persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who arrived in India till 2014. The CAA applies to Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Christian, Buddhist and Jain community member who have fled the above-mentioned countries.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had stated many times that CAA rules would be notified ahead of the Lok Sabha election 2024 which are likely to be held in April-May.
