CEC To Present List Of Newly-Elected MPs To President For 18th Lok Sabha Formation

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will meet President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday to present the comprehensive list of newly-elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to start the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha.

After that, the President will invite the largest party to form the government.

On Wednesday the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously passed a resolution to elect Narendra Modi as their leader for the third time. This decision was taken during a crucial meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Delhi on Wednesday.

NDA leaders lauded Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and the nation’s progress under his stewardship over the past decade. Simultaneously, President Droupadi Murmu dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha on Wednesday, in line with the Union Cabinet’s recommendation.

“The President, on June 5, 2024, accepted the Cabinet’s advice and signed the order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha, exercising her powers as outlined in Sub-Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution,” stated a release from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday.

On the same day, Prime Minister Modi and his Council of Ministers tendered their resignations to President Murmu. She accepted their resignation and requested that they continue in their roles until the new government assumes office.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election results were tallied on Tuesday, with the BJP securing 240 seats, a notable decrease from its 2019 tally of 303, marking the first instance since 2014 that the party failed to secure a majority independently. In contrast, the Congress made significant gains, clinching 99 seats. The emergence of the INDIA bloc, surpassing 230 seats, provided formidable competition, defying earlier forecasts.
