Union minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday accused the Trinamool Congress of opposing the special intensive revision (SIR) of West Bengal’s electoral rolls to safeguard crores of unauthorised voters.
Speaking at the Parivartan Yatra in Mohanpur, Paschim Medinipur, he claimed that people across the state had already decided to “throw out” the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Majumdar said the revision had been welcomed by genuine citizens, but TMC leaders were refusing to cooperate. He argued that the ruling party feared losing fake votes, stating that “with the deletion of names of crores of unauthorised voters who infiltrated into the country and got ration cards and Aadhar documents with the help of TMC leaders will be thrown out now.”
BJP Claims TMC Losing Political Ground
Majumdar asserted that Mamata Banerjee’s voter base had weakened and insisted that no force would be able to prevent the TMC’s defeat in the upcoming elections. He stated that the people of Bengal wanted “parivartan” (change) and said citizens would “reply democratically” to alleged attacks on BJP workers.
TMC Rejects SIR as “Silent Vote Rigging”
The Trinamool Congress strongly opposed the Election Commission’s SIR drive, describing it as “silent vote rigging.” Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP wanted to win elections through money power rather than public support, saying the government and EC were “branding all Bengali migrants as Bangladeshis.”
Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee called the SIR a hidden form of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Mamata warned that “if even one voter’s name is dropped, we will crush the BJP-led government,” adding that TMC would not allow the ruling party “to snatch our rights.”
Mamata Claims Rising Fear Among Citizens
The chief minister accused the BJP of attempting to impose “a super emergency.” She claimed that 14 citizens had died out of fear, some reportedly by suicide, and expressed concern that the Election Commission had not issued any condolence messages. Banerjee also argued that the SIR could not be completed “in such a short time” and accused the BJP of attempting to disrupt her government’s work.
Booth-Level Officers Raise Concerns
Booth-level officers responsible for conducting door-to-door verification expressed concerns over safety and rising tension during the SIR process. Many reportedly threatened to boycott the exercise unless stronger security arrangements were ensured. During training sessions, several BLOs underlined escalating risks due to the political environment.
