A disturbing case of brutal ragging has surfaced at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala, where first-year students were subjected to horrific physical and mental abuse for nearly three months. Following a formal complaint, five third-year students have been arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act and are currently in police custody.
Victims Endured Extreme Torture
According to the complaint filed by three first-year students from Thiruvananthapuram, the ragging began in November 2024 and continued until January 2025. The seniors allegedly forced their juniors to strip naked and hung dumbbells from their private parts, causing unbearable pain. They were also stabbed with geometry box compasses and subjected to other brutal physical torture.
Pain Inflicted Deliberately
The perpetrators reportedly applied lotion to the victims’ wounds, intensifying their suffering. When the juniors screamed in agony, the lotion was forcibly smeared into their mouths. The accused seniors even recorded these acts on video and threatened the victims, warning them of severe consequences if they reported the abuse.
Extortion for Alcohol and Brutal Beatings
Apart from physical torture, the accused regularly extorted money from the juniors on Sundays to purchase alcohol. Those who refused to comply were severely beaten. Unable to endure the torment, one student confided in his father, who encouraged him to file a police complaint.
Arrests and Investigation Underway
Following the complaint, the five accused students were suspended and arrested. Police officials have confirmed that they will be produced before a magistrate by Wednesday afternoon.
Growing Concern Over Ragging Incidents
This shocking case comes weeks after a 15-year-old schoolboy in Kochi died by suicide, allegedly due to severe ragging. His mother claimed that relentless bullying pushed him to take the extreme step.
Authorities are now under pressure to enforce stricter anti-ragging measures and ensure student safety across educational institutions.
