The ruling BRS has unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming Telangana assembly elections, scheduled for November 30. Among the major promises are increased social security pensions, enhanced financial aid under the ‘Rythu Bandhu’ scheme for farmers, and provision of LPG cylinders at a subsidised rate of Rs 400 each.
BRS chief and current Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, popularly known as KCR, announced the provision of life insurance with a cover of Rs five lakh for the 93 lakh below-poverty-line families in the state, at no premium cost to them.
A notable highlight is the gradual hike in the social security pension from Rs 2,016 to Rs 5,000 monthly over five years. The manifesto details the increment to start at Rs 3,016 in the first year. Additionally, pensions for the Divyang (persons with disabilities) will increase from the current Rs 4,016 to Rs 6,016 within five years.
The ‘Rythu Bandhu’ scheme, which currently grants farmers Rs 10,000 annually per acre, is set to see a boost to Rs 16,000 over the next half-decade. Addressing the surge in LPG prices, the manifesto promises LPG at Rs 400 for ‘eligible beneficiaries’, with the state absorbing the excess cost.
The manifesto further boosts the ‘Arogya Sri’ health insurance from Rs five lakh to Rs 15 lakh, pledges the distribution of fine rice, and commits to offering a Rs 3,000 monthly livelihood allowance to “deserving poor women”. On housing, the BRS promises land for impoverished citizens without homes, commending the current housing policy.
Regarding the pension scheme for state employees, KCR noted the reluctance of the Centre in reinstating the old system. A committee will soon investigate the matter, he added.
Expressing confidence in his party’s chances, KCR assured the realisation of these promises within six to seven months post-election. He cited a 90% implementation rate of welfare schemes from the previous manifesto.
In response, state Congress President, A Revanth Reddy, criticised BRS, claiming their manifesto echoed promises previously made by the Congress. Reddy has also thrown a challenge to KCR for an oath at the Telangana Martyrs Memorial, affirming an election without using money or liquor for influence, and another urging the CM to ensure prompt salaries and social security pensions by November 1.
