Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked at Nanded Sahib in Maharashtra on Thursday while he was on a private visit with his family members.
According to preliminary reports, an unidentified assailant attacked Badal, but his personal security guard intervened and prevented the attacker from causing more serious injuries.
Badal sustained an injury to his arm and was subsequently taken to a private hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately known.
The incident took place during Badal’s private visit to Nanded Sahib, a major Sikh pilgrimage centre. Further details about the identity of the attacker, the nature of the attack and the motive were awaited.
The attack comes less than two years after Badal survived an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar in December 2024, when former militant Narain Singh Chaura opened fire at him. A security personnel had overpowered the attacker, and Badal escaped unharmed in that incident.
A video released on Thursday confirmed that Badal was attacked at Nanded Sahib and suffered an injury to his arm before being taken to hospital.
