BJP sweeps Tripura, faces setbacks in other bypolls

In the recent series of by-polls in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained its stronghold in Tripura, yet confronted setbacks in other regions, indicating a fervent political landscape as the country approaches the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In Tripura, BJP seized victory notably in the Dhanpur and Boxanagar constituencies, despite facing allegations of election rigging from the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M). The latter has urged for re-polls with stricter supervision, pointing out significant discrepancies in the vote count compared to past elections. The Tipra Motha party, which did not participate in the by-polls, seconded these concerns and criticised CPI(M) for not offering stronger resistance amid the supposed irregularities.
Meanwhile, in Dhupguri, West Bengal, the competition intensified as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) edged out BJP. Despite the loss, the BJP remains hopeful and critical of the TMC’s governance, anticipating a turn of events in their favour in the upcoming national elections.Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) emerged victorious in the Jharkhand’s Dumri by-polls, affirming the public’s trust in the existing Soren government despite BJP’s allegations of voter intimidation and misuse of administrative resources.
In Kerala’s Kottayam district, the United Democratic Front (UDF) rejoiced as Chandy Oommen won by a historic margin in the Puthuppally constituency, surpassing records previously set by his late father, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Although CPI(M) acknowledged their defeat gracefully, they denied any anti-incumbency wave and voiced readiness to bounce back with stronger strategies. The BJP, which trailed in third place, recognized the need to revise its approach given its decreased vote share.
